“Really great course covering the essentials in depth. Having done BAS courses I found this more thorough due to Claire’s amazing veterinary expertise rather than solely coming from a breeder’s perspective. Extensive course notes and references, preventives, diagnostics and solutions that can be applied directly to your own herd with the aim of improving your experience, ultimately leading to happier, healthier floofs! Claire’s passion for alpacas is inspiring.”
- Laura Christian, UK
“I have absolutely loved this course and am really looking forward to the next course. I have owned alpaca for 6 years and bred for 3 years and I have learned something from every week on this course and the week I was most shocked about and learned the most from was the biosecurity week and I am very grateful that you have put on these courses.”
- Dionne Knight, USA
“As a relatively new alpaca owner this was just what I needed. It was a very thorough course and well organised. Claire, your presentation style is very clear and well paced. Your detailed knowledge, experience and passion is very evident.
Making this amount of quality content so accessible is excellent for those wanting to learn and advance their knowledge. I think it is excellent value for money, especially taking into account how much it would cost to travel and pay for accommodation.”
- Katy Fawcett, UK
“Fantastic course for beginner alpaca owners and experienced ones. It covers the gamut of health care considerations for camelids with fantastic case studies, illustrations and in-depth information. Claire is a great instructor with loads of knowledge!”
- Rita Soares, Campo Verde Alpacas, Victoria (Australia)
“I had a little knowledge from my own reading and research but wanted to complete this course before my first small herd arrives. I think this course is perfect for beginners and more experienced camelid owners alike, everyone will learn something! I now feel more confident about embarking on my alpaca owner journey armed with the further knowledge and understanding I have gained. I would strongly recommend!”
- Lianne Patten, Lincolnshire (UK)
“This course proved so useful as an opportunity to build on my knowledge of all aspects of alpaca care and to look at making further on farm improvements as a result of new learning. Claire's presentations were very clear and informative and were so interesting with plenty of time for asking questions too. Would highly recommend the course to anyone who already has or is thinking of getting their own alpacas. “

General camelid management
Includes different methods of handling, general husbandry, routine herd health procedures that are essential to looking after camelids, and an intro to basic dental care.
Nutritional management
In this module, we will discuss the anatomy and function of the camelid gastrointestinal tract, and their unique adaptations. We will cover the key nutritional requirements of camelids, explain terminology, and consider how to feed animals with differing needs. You will learn how to use some simple tools to help you balance the ration fed.
Parasite control: worms, coccidia and fluke
This is one of the most critical areas of managing camelids. In this module, we will discuss what parasites need to be managed, and how to develop a parasite control strategy that is tailored to your own farm.
Biosecurity for the farm
Biosecurity is a fundamental process to consider as part of your herd health plan. In this module we’ll talk about the risks, and precautions that you can take both to limit the spread of any potentially infectious disease that may occur on your farm and to limit transmission onto your farm from outside.
Skin problems
In this module, we will discuss the different types of mange, and how to recognise and manage it. We will also consider other potential skin problems that camelids may experience.
Health problems and what to do when things go wrong!
In this section we discuss what you can do as an owner when things go wrong and you find yourself dealing with a sick animal. We consider the diagnostic tests that are available, discuss field therapeutics and also discuss a number of selected scenarios that you may be presented with.
